WHAT IS A BRAND?
And, how do you know if you have one?

Let’s get this out of the way.  If you have a blog, or a Tik-Tok, or an Etsy store selling tiny hats for hedgehogs - you have a brand. If you are creating a new resume, or query letter, or Pumpkin Spice recipe video - you are expanding your brand. You are in possession of this brand even if you are also in complete denial and refuse to acknowledge said brand when passing it on the street.

So, what is a brand?

Is a logo a brand? (hint: a logo is not a brand)

The name of your business (while important) is also not a brand.

What you do, the services that you offer - are not your brand.

WHAT IS A BRAND?

Your brand is the experience you create.

Specifically, your brand is the experience you create for the people you serve.

It is the interactions that people have with you and with your business. It is your services, your images, your copy. It is your phone conversations, emails, advertisements, and your products.

And the clearer you are on what you want that experience to be, the more intentional you are about creating it - the stronger that brand experience becomes.

Brands are trusted to the point that everything they do is consistent with who they claim to be.

This means that you can have an awesome brand that stands out from the crowd:

  • Even if you do more than one thing

  • Even if you are just a person.

  • Even if you are hunting for the perfect job.

  • Even if you make a ton of different products.

  • Even if your modality is hard to describe.

  • Even if your job is boring.

So how do you get there?
